Olaf Klungel is Professor of Pharmacoepidemiologic Methods and head of the division of Pharmacoepidemiology & Clinical Pharmacology at Utrecht University. He was trained as a pharmacist and epidemiologist. His main research area is the development, improvement and evaluation of innovative methods of observational drug research. Main applications are in the post-registration phase of drug development. He is elected board member of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) representing Academnic Europe/Africa and elected steering group member of the European Network of Centres for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance (ENCePP). He was chair of the scientific program committee of the International Conference of Pharmacoepidemiology and Therapeutic Risk Management (ICPE) in Prague 2018. Prof. Klungel is member of the executive committee of the European Program in Pharmacoepidemiology & Pharmacovigilance (EU2P, Director of Benefit/Risk Assessment domain), and he is principal investigator of the EU Pharmacoepidemiology & Pharmacovigilance Research Network (EU PE&PV, formerly PROTECT). The EU PE&PV network conducts research on safety and effectiveness of medicines for the European Medicines Agency. In addition to his research, Prof. Klungel teaches pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacotherapy to medical and pharmacy students. He is (co-)author of over 300 papers in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and research reports. His H-index is 43.
